  • Can I use my HDTV as an external video source for FCP?

Posted by Sean Meehan on June 23, 2009 at 8:39 pm

    Hello all,
I’m currently running FCP 6 on my Macbook Pro, and I’m looking to set up a second monitor for viewing the video, like most legitimate editing suites. Unfortunately, I’m on a student filmmaker budget, which means that I can’t spring for a monitor. I do however have my HDTV which I often hook up to my MBP with the HDMI to VGA adapter when I watch netflix or something else like that. My question is: is there any way that I can set up my television and laptop so that I can run the video through my television? The only way that I know how to do it now is to connect the television, elect to not mirror the displays, and then drag the canvas over to the free space on the TV, enlarge it, and then I get a passable result. I’d rather have it work more efficiently and crisp, but I’m not sure if there is a way to do this.

Does anyone know of a better way to do this?

    Thanks,
    Sean Meehan

That is the only free way. But you don’t need to drag the Canvas over there, you can use VIEW>PLAYBACK>DIGITAL CINEMA PREVIEW. But the image won’t be much sharper. If you want a full quality sharp image on that TV ten you need a matrox MXO2 Mini or AJA I/O Express…they are more in your budget range.

Or get a DVI to HDMI cable and use FCP’s Digital Cinema Preview. This will send your video out full screen to the second monitor connected to your computer.

I don’t really trust this option for color at all, but if you just want to see the video bigger, it’s a good option.
