  • can i shoot 50p (canon 7d) and edit it with 50i?

Posted by Aviv Vana on November 30, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Well the title says it all.
I want to buy the Canon 7d and I will be shooting with videographers in pal land who shoot in 50i?
How can we use the footage together if i choose 50p or 25p? Is there a process before we can start editing? Will there be a reduction in quality? is 50p or 25p preferred when working with 50i?

    Thank You

    Hi Aviv,
If you have both kinds of footage, you must decide if you wan’t to end Progressive or Interlaced.
You can always put Progressive stuff in an Interlaced sequence. No problem.
But if you want to put Interlaced stuff in a Progressive sequence, you must de-interlace your footage.
Deinterlace meansa generation lost, so is worth to use a good application or plugin to do so.
If you are using canon footsge, I gues you are transcoding that before editing.
When you transcode the footage, is a good opportunity for the de-interlacing.
MPGStreamclip can do both things very well and fast.
Compressor may be better, but more slow.

I would shoot 50p to match the 50i footage better. Because you are converting the 7D’s footage to ProRes anyway for editing you can set it to output as 50i ( Never had to do it but it should be an option. Make sure it is upper field)

As someone working in 50i (acquisition and delivery) and as someone also working with a happy slappy new 7D camera owner I would beg you to please shoot 50p if you want to make your editor happy.

We now return you to your scheduled programming 🙂

    Best
    Andy
