Can I import multiple cards of clips at once without FCP X renaming them?
I have lots of cards I’m transfering to clips. I am using FCP 7 to transfer to Pro Res cause when I did it with FCP X, it kept on renaming them so everything from card 1 kept the name but then everything from card 2 had a (1) after it, card 3 had a (2) after it and so on…..
Because of that I decided to use FCP 7 to make my clips. I have each clip named the card name with the clip number after it. If I import more than one card’s worth of clips at once, it renames the clips adding those numbers again. So I need to import each cards worth of clips one by one. Is there a way to change it so FCP X stops renaming things? I should add, when I’m importing it into my library, I’m not bringing it into the project file but keeping it in its original place.

Use externally managed media instead of copying the clips into the library.

I’m doing that but my clips get renamed in their folders. It adds numbers in parenthesis to the end of them.

That usually only happens when you let FCPX do the importing. I’ve never seen it touch the name of a file with the ‘leave in place’ option selected.
My workflow is to convert all the files in EditReady, organise everything into folders in the Finder based on cards, days or whatever, then add to FCPX telling it to leave the files in place. It shouldn’t rename any files.

I have leave in place checked and it totally changes them. I wonder if it’s cause what it’s importing all has similar titles. Each clip is titled something like B camera #1 clip_1, B camera #1 clip_2 and so forth. But it’s definitely renaming when i import even with leave in place selected

I’ve always thought that the renaming e.g. filename (1) is FCPX’s way of handling multiple files with the same name in one folder whether inside a library or in an external but managed Finder folder. So the only way to get filename (1) is if FCPX created or moved the file to that location and found another file of the same name already there. It does the same with the date-stamped folders it creates. Multiple cards imported from the same date end of being date, date (1), date (2), etc.
In fact FCPX’s current method of storing even managed imports in date-stamped folders is, I think, supposed to prevent file renaming because every import ends up in it’s own folder so no two filenames in that folder should ever be the same.
I just went back and looked at all the projects I currently have on my hard drive and as far as I can see, not one media file has been renamed.
My first thought is maybe something about the file name is causing FCPX to truncate it so that it sees multiple files with the same name. You might try a quick test with some files you named by hand, avoiding any sometimes reserved characters like #, etc.
Other than that, we’re obviously doing something differently that makes it work for me but not for you.
