  • Can I fix “hot spots” in footage?

Posted by Urchin on November 9, 2005 at 7:17 pm

My company shoots a TV show that is host based. On one of our latest episodes the cameraman was not aware of some hot spots on our host’s face such as on the forehead and nose. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am an intermediate skilled user in After Effects. Is there anything I can do or even try? Last time it cost an awful lot of money to repair the footage & I’d rather do it myself.
    Thanks in advance-

maybe you could do something with the clone tool or wire removal tool to remove them by placing the pixels next to them over the top. Not sure if it’ll work but here’s hoping.

I know I know I know this doesn’t help your current situation (and I’m probably preaching to the choir here…) but you said that “last time” it was expensive to repair? Ugh, it shouldn’t have happened again. Get yourself a different cameraman, or retrain the new one. This is one of those things where a minute of pre-production can save hours of post-production. Believe me, I’ve been in your shoes. I had to get rid of a shooter once because they refused to shoot out in the field with the zebra turned on because it annoyed them. Consequently a good deal of their footage was overexposed. Once those whites clip…it’s gone, man. Gone.

try to pull a key of the hot spots and then fill them with color fills that match the skin tone at that spot. then overlay some combo of noise and/or fractal noise, ramps etc. so that the color isn’t totally flat.

it might be better or it might just look weird but its worth a shot.

Unfortunately the powers of politics are at play in this situation, if it were up to me, there wouldn’t have been a second time. Thanks for your response though.
