  • Can i find out what is the best way to send video from FCP to protools?

Everytime after sending OMFI audio to protools, we have to playout to tape the program so that protools can capture or digitise to his comp. In avid, all we need to do is to send omfi to protools and he will get both audio and video. Well the video is for reference. But what i am trying to find out is…. is there a faster and better way. Or a equivalent way of sending video to protools without having to play it onto tape for 1/2 hour. Whats the best way to send video low res to protools. Pls give me some advice ,,,,

We did a 1 1/2 hour show a few weeks ago where the Protools-guy insisted that I sent the material to tape. Finally he tried to import my QuickTime-file and it worked great he said.

    For offlineing we used:
    – 360×288 at 25fps
    – JPEG Medium/50%
    – QuickTime

For finalmixing we upped it to full rez PAL, JPEG Medium.

The files turn out okey size-wise. For the full PAL we’re talking about 1.5 MB/s and very good quality for even lipsyncing. If this is the best-way, I don’t no. I exported the program close to 2X realtime from the editing suite, didn’t have to hassle with tapes and the protools guy said “it imported really quickly” (whatever that means, 1 1/2 hours material always is 1 1/2 hours of material :)).

We have two protools suites in house tied into our X-SAN via gig ethernet. They get their OMF’s over the net and also get a quicktime movie the same way. They mix using the QT, and the only time they get a tape is when they layback to the digibeta.

I believe that there is some extra feature in the protools set up that enables them to mix to QT, so if your mixer doesnt’ have it, then yes, they would need a tape. However, I wouldn’t accept that situation since tapeless is so much more efficient.

So, to answer your question, yes, there is a faster and better way!

I export OMF files for the audio and a Quicktime movie for the video reference. If it’s a long show, I send over a 360×240 DV25 movie so as not to use up too much of his drive space. Our audio guy has no problem bringing it into his Pro Tools rig and syncing it up with the OMF files. I just make both the audio & the video files and transfer it to his machine over our network. So far, it’s worked everytime. When he’s finished, he transfers his sweetened mix back to me over the network and I simply copy it, import it intp FCP, add two (or more) new audio tracks and add it to my timeline. When I’m ready to go to tape, I simply “turn off” the proginal audo tracks and output to Digibeta.
I’m not sure if we’re doing anything special or not. It just works.
