Can I change Layer Source???
Posted by Iwgalloway on March 12, 2007 at 11:40 amHi
I’m using After Effects 7 for Mac…
I have various layers in my composition. I want to change the file that sources one of the layers.
I know that i COULD re-import the file in the Project window using the Replace Footage command, thereby swapping the source material.
However, I’d like to have BOTH original clips in my project window, and just swap which one relates to the layer in the Composition [timeline] window.
Can this be done???
If so, could it be done with nested compositions as well??
Thanks

March 12, 2007 at 12:12 pmCan you duplicate the layer (then replace footage (apple-H on Mac) and just hide it when not needed?

March 12, 2007 at 12:36 pmAaah – no, since if I duplicate the layer I’ll just have two layers, both linked to the same footage file.
If I then replace the footage file, BOTH layers’ sources will change…

March 7, 2008 at 9:34 pmNot sure where that came from, but since I needed to find this info myself and was led to this thread… I thought I’d at least leave my input:
To replace selected layers’ source footage with footage item selected in Project panel:
PC – Ctrl+Alt+/ (on main keyboard)
MAC – Command+Option+/ (on main keyboard)I pulled that from the Adobe Help Viewer 1.1 and it worked for me.

September 17, 2009 at 11:48 amNot sure if this apply to After Effects 7…
To replace the source footage item for a layer with another footage
item, without affecting changes made to the layer properties, select the layer and then Alt-drag (Windows) or Option-drag (Mac OS) the new footage item onto the layer in the Timeline panel.(From After Effects CS4 help – About imported files and footage items)

March 23, 2010 at 8:21 amEverybody seems to have a different explanation ! Funny ! I just highlight the layer in the timeline then highlight the new source in the project select press on it and then only press alt an drag it onto the new one.
This is for a Mac.

October 25, 2012 at 10:58 pmThank you!! This is exactly what I needed because it keeps all the effects you have already done on the layer 🙂
