  • Can I add a blur JUST to a specific color in FCPX?

Posted by Donny Rowles on April 12, 2019 at 7:52 pm

Hi, I’ve got some video where I’ve got a blue sheet behind my subject. I didn’t get the depth of field
I wanted, and I can see wrinkles in the sheet behind my subject. I can create shape masks, and blur the masks,
but then I get a defined “line” you can see where it goes from blurry to unblurred (even when using feathering.)

Is there a way to create a color mask – and then apply a blur to that color mask? So that I effectively just blur all parts of the image that are a specific (in my case – blue) color?

    Thanks in advance,
    Donny Rowles

    Hi Donny,

Hopefully you found the answer by now. If not, you can use this article to see the steps that I think will work for you. First apply the blur, then use the Inspector to add a color mask.

Thanks much Jared, I’m debating between using the technique you shared, and using a shape mask where I can draw
points. I’m trying to blur the background of an interview, and am having trouble avoiding the “person is glowing” look that comes with trying to blur the background. This is a strong option though – thanks for taking the time to share it.

If you want to, email a portion of the clip or a screenshot to FinalCutProHelp@me.com and I can create a demo for my next live show.

I would but it’s an interview shot, and I can’t put it “out there” because of the client.

Thanks much for your help – it makes all the difference in a community like this.
