Posted by John Willis on November 5, 2010 at 12:41 am

I have researched previous discussions on this topic and have gotten bits and pieces of the answers I need but not the whole picture! I’ve read that you can send a sequence to compressor and change the extension to .flv…but what settings are best for say a 1280 x 720 project,,,10 mins long…in order for the video to stream smoothly in an iweb designed page to be hosted on mobileme? Is this possible?

I have tried several encodes in compressor and can’t seem to get a smooth playback from mobileme.

    Thanks,

    John

H.264 not working? Works for me. My website is FULL of them…demo sections of various shows I have edited.

    Shane,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, H.264 is working…but I can not find the right settings in compressor…either pull down or custom that gives me a smooth video out of mobile me when streaming.
Any help would be appreciated! And I would love to see your web site. Do you host from mobile me and author with iweb like I am trying to do? Or can you recommend an easter more effecient workflow?

    Thanks,
    John

Thanks Shane. I like your website! I’m afraid that your clients have better connectivity with T1 lines etc. A lot of my corporate clients here in Raleigh are using DSL and cable for their access. And some of them won’t go near QT files! So, it looks like I am going to have to use the .flv change in Compressor and then try to find a display size and frame rate that won’t take to long to load and play smoothly.

If you know of any changes I can make to the H.264 streaming presets in Compressor…would you let me know? Thanks again for your help.

[John Willis] ” I’m afraid that your clients have better connectivity with T1 lines etc.”

No… a lot of them watch them from home, via DSL or Cable. And I have cable, and I test watch before I play them. What connectivity do you have? How did they play for you?

[John Willis] “t looks like I am going to have to use the .flv change in Compressor and then try to find a display size and frame rate that won’t take to long to load and play smoothly.”

How well did my site play for you? Load fine? Or did it take a long time? Not play smooth? You seem to indicate that it did play smoothly…did it not?

    Hey Shane,

Sorry, I got slammed yesterday and am just getting back to you. I have cable thru Time Warner(Road Runner)…which is not the best…but typical of what my clients use (and the reason I keep it!) My website loads and plays fine thru my Mac. But when I go to my old PC to test, thats when I have issues. And my old PC is a Dell I used for editing with Premiere Pro three years ago before switching to FCP! So, I know it’s not the computer. I just worry that my new HD video… especially on scenes where there are pans, pulls and zooms… that the perspective client is going to see jumpy video that they assume is a result of my work!

I am also trying to get the most out of picture quality…in order to show off the hi def!

I had some trouble with a couple of your Narrative pieces on your website at first…but after I went and loaded the latest version of QT on my PC…that seemed to resolve the issue. Oh, by the way, awesome editing on the “Call 911” piece! The cutaways really gave impact to how the EMT was relating his emotions towards the little girl…you got me to tear up man!!!

If I may, a few more questions:

Why are you not using the .flv extension in Compressor…don’t you get grief from clients about having to deal with QT?

Are you going in and “tweaking” the video settings of the QT lan preset in compressor?

Do you try to stay with a 640 X 360 screen size for streaming? I like that size and would hate to have to go smaller.

What do you set for average and max data rate?

Is there anything else I am missing?

    Thanks for your time Shane.

[John Willis] “Why are you not using the .flv extension in Compressor…don’t you get grief from clients about having to deal with QT?”

Because H.264 is a web standard, and pretty much EVERYONE has Quicktime. I have gotten zero complaints from clients.

[John Willis] “Are you going in and “tweaking” the video settings of the QT lan preset in compressor?”

Nope…using the preset and adjusting nothing.

[John Willis] “Do you try to stay with a 640 X 360 screen size for streaming? I like that size and would hate to have to go smaller.”

That’s the size I use. Seems to be a perfect size.

[John Willis] “What do you set for average and max data rate?”

Whatever the preset is…I have no idea.

[John Willis] “Is there anything else I am missing?”

Just use the preset…stop trying to overthink this.
