  • Can FC Express act as digitizing station for FCP?

Posted by Herb Sevush on July 20, 2006 at 1:53 pm

(This message is cross posted in the Final Cut Express Forum)

I need a secondary digitizing station for my FCP-HD system, and as I don’t need all the extras of Final Cut Studio, nor the expense, I was thinking that a simple FC Express setup, networked to my main FCP G5 would be a good idea. My question is — am I right?

I need to ingest both DVCAM and DVCPRO 50 natively. I would like, but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker, to assign camera angles during capture because I do a lot of multi-camera work. I would capture the files to my FCP fibre channel drives, and then open the project file up in FCP when ready to start cutting. I would also need the ability to export in the codecs I use with FCP: DV, DVCPRO50, Uncompressed, MPEG2, Windows (with flip for Mac.)

Is this possible and what would be the minimum hardware requirements to run Express for this purpose — could I get away with a Mac Mini for example, or would an older G4 be the way to go.

    Thanks

    Herb,

I don’t see why it wouldn’t, but you should also take a look at BTVpro, It’s a great little capture app, does killer adjustable time-lapse and still capture as well as motion. And its CHEAP!

    I believe it’s at bensoftware.com

    Have a wonderful day.

Unless it’s changed, FC Express was DV only. Not sure if they’ve added DVCPro 50 support.

Does it support TC now? It didn’t originally. So sure you could capture a clip, but I thought it didn’t capture TC info – for that sole purpose of keeping it from being a rough cut or capture solution.

I knew they have added HDV support in FC Express, but I dont think it can do DVCPRO

    It’s DV and HDV only…

Sure wish it supported at least one offline codec: OLRT would be fine.
