Can Entry Resolve Work With A 2K Plus Control Surface
Posted by Chris Martin on April 13, 2010 at 7:56 pmQuestion 1: Can the $995 version of Resolve interface with a 2K+ control surface?
If “Yes”, then…
Question 2: Could you create an ethernet hub where both a 2K Plus and Resolve both shared the same control surface?

April 14, 2010 at 12:02 amMy bet is “no.”.
The 2k+ interface is a custom-build for that architecture, and my sense is that the Blackmagic Resolve/Mac is another departure. Thats just an opinion and it would be up to someone from BM to clarify that.

April 14, 2010 at 5:36 amSomething may have changed today, but the answer Monday is that the Mac based product will only work with USB panels. Since the 2K panels are Ethernet based, they will not be supported on the Mac.

April 14, 2010 at 3:30 pmI can confirm, the software only version for US$995 will work with the new BMD panels, via USB, and we will add third party panel support as quickly as we can. Tangent Wave is already implemented.
The legacy 2K panels are only applicable for the Linux version.

April 14, 2010 at 10:39 pmThanks for the feedback. So that begets the question of can the Linux version of Resolve be purchased without the control panels that can be used by those of us with 2K+ panels. Doing the math it would seem that would make it $19,995.
Can someone from BM/DaVinci confirm this?

April 14, 2010 at 10:43 pmHi Chris,
As Peter mentioned, the 2K network panels will work with the Linux systems (and ONLY the Linux systems).

April 15, 2010 at 1:48 amHi Chris,
Further to the information from Peter and Dwaine, you might like to read the first part of Grant Petty’s email from NAB 2010. Amongst other things, it states, “anyone who has an older DaVinci 2K system can use the control surface they have, and upgrade to DaVinci Resolve just by paying the Linux license only.” So you’re perfectly correct in saying that would be $19,995.

April 17, 2010 at 1:36 amI wonder if the Resolve can run side by side with a Linux DaVinci 2k, in order to keep telecine operations?

April 17, 2010 at 8:18 pmHi Steve,
You can share the 2K network grading panel with the Resolve (Linux) and the 2K by using a 9pin A/B switch box with a 9pin to RJ45 adapter on each port. You just power down the panel, make the switch and then power it back up again. It will automatically communicate with the application and you don’t even need to quit the application itself.
I’ve done this before and it works very well.
