  • Can capture sound into Vegas with HD, but not DV

Posted by Kevin Casey on November 3, 2010 at 11:50 pm

    Hi all-

I have Sony Movie Studio Platinum 10, and like it a lot. I have absolutely no problem capturing HD (down-converted to DV for ease of editing) video and sound, using the program’s internal capture device – and it all edits just fine. However, when I try to capture old DV-cam video from several years back, I get no sound, just video when I capture. I have tried capturing the same DV footage with Moviemaker and also with WinDV, but the same problem exists – video but no sound. I realize Vegas captures DV with an external capture device (and yes, I have that box checked), and I have tried all sorts of things, like changing within my camera from 32k to 48k audio, but nothing works. Also, yes, the camera output is set to DV, not HD. Do I need to download a different audio codec, or could there be some other problem? This is driving me nuts. My HD video captured just great, but Sony Vegas doesn’t seem to like the old DV stuff, at least not the audio part of it.
Any and all suggestions are welcome!!

I think you may have hit on the problem. If you recorded at 32k you need to capture at 32k and I’m not sure Vegas supports that. If several programs can’t capture your audio it all points to your camera. At 32k you get 4 channels of audio and if the audio has been recorded on channels 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 that would explain why you are getting no audio. You may have to capture those tapes as analog to get their audio. I had this happen to me once and I learned my lesson. Always shoot DV at 48k.

Thanks John. You might be onto something there. How do I “capture as analog” into Vegas Movie Studio? Or is this possible with Vegas? Never done that before…

You would need a device like the Canopus ADVC-110 that takes analog signals and digitizes them. You plug the video and audio output from your camera into the device the same way you would plug the camera into a TV for playback. Then the device digitizes your tapes like it would for recording from a VCR.

Alternately you could record just the audio into your computer via your computer’s sound card and the audio output of your camera and then sync it with the video that you captured via firewire. This is more work but would give higher quality video.
