I’m trying to Capture from a Panasonic ag-DV2000 mini Dv deck to FCP 6. When i try to capture in the insert Reel screen extra clips show up. If i let the batch capture run, it will finish the clip i logged then continue to capture something else. When i press escape it replaces a clip i captured earlier with the few seconds it just tried to capture. All the earlier information is gone. The clips in the timeline go to Media Offline and i can’t find the original clip externally. i fixed it before by simply recapturing the missing clip and naming it the same thing but now everytime i go to batch capture it will erase something else.

I think i need to delete the old logged clip info

I hope someone can help me i have a deadline

Are you editing from your capture scratch folder? That might be why the new captures are overwriting the media that you’re already using. I would suggest moving the captured media into a dedicated editing folder. If that isn’t going to work for you, try naming your capture project something different so that FCP creates an new subfolder inside of capture scratch, or make sure that what you’re capturing doesn’t have the same name as what you’ve already used in edit. Example: clip name “b” “c” and so on. I sounds like you’re overwriting media to me. Make sure each item you intend to capture has a unique name so that it doesn’t interfere with what you’ve already got going.

    Hey Ryan,

I’m trying to capture off the same kind of deck into FCP 6 and I can’t get FCP to see the device. I’ve restarted and changed the device settings multiple times but it still won’t even read it as a ‘capture now.’ The window pops up briefly and then disappears. I’m actually just capturing the whole tape, so if I knew how to get FCP to talk to the device that’d be enough. Any pointers? This deck has a lot of options but I don’t have the manual. I’ve tried it on all edit modes (player, recorder, passive) and have that ‘wheel knob’ set to DV (the other options are ‘edit’ and ‘off’, and a bunch of meaningless dots). I’m actually surprised I found a post about this machine since it’s 10 years old. Thanks!

    Alex,

first thing you should check is that your FCP easy setup matches the incoming footage. (Assuming NTSC DV firewire basic.) Often times that clears up communication problems; however, if you haven’t done so already, check your cables from your system and your deck to make sure nothing is loose. Once you’ve launched your capture window with the project properly set up, everything should be good. If FCP is still having trouble recognizing the deck, go to the “capture settings” tab in the capture window and select “non-controllable” device. You’ll lose timecode information and have to do a capture now, but it should at least allow you to grab the footage.

    Good luck!

    Hey Josh,

Thanks for responding so quickly. I’ve been trying that and restarting and everything and it just won’t communicate with the computer, not even for Capture Now. I think we have something that we put in between the machines to make it work, but I hate set-ups like that. Anyway, thanks for your response!

The only thing i can think of off the top of my head is to try turning the device control to “non controllable device” and then hitting capture now as you play your tape. This is found on the log and capture window under the capture setting tab. If you can even get that far you said a window pops up then goes away? Even if this works i don’t know if it will actually fix your problem.

I have a problem with batch capture (canon HV20 to MacOS X – Final cut pro6). It reads “Unable to locate timecode….possible outside range of tape”.)
    I need some haelp! Thanks

Make sure your marked “time in” is not to close to the beginning of the tape. You should at least let the timecode run for about 15 to 30 seconds before you mark in or the deck will get lost when it runs off the timecode.
