  • Can Aja output HD to Sony PVM L5 w/o Optional Card?

Posted by Brad Froman on October 25, 2011 at 8:44 pm

I have an Aja LHi (w/box) and a Sony PVM L5 20″ monitor. Will Aja output an HD signal to display on the Sony without the optional HD SDI card? I saw an article from 2006 from one of the Creative Cow hosts saying this was possible back then. Say it’s so!

Yeah, just run analog component to the monitor and there you go. As long as it’s the Multiformat PVM L5/1 monitors, that displays beautiful HD via Component. It will auto switch to HD when it gets the signal from the card.

Believe it or not, we still have our 20 and 14″ models in our machine room used on a daily basis until those suckers finally conk out.

Well that just makes me very happy…not having to spend on an HD Monitor for color calibrations. I’ve had this L5 20″, plus I’ve got an L5 14″ and they’ve both been barely used sitting in boxes for a few years.

So, by feeding the L5 with the Kona, is there any difference in the image compared to the L5 if it had the HD SDI input board?

Not really. I graded most of the episodes of “Good Eats” for the Food Network on a whole range of other broadcast projects using those monitors before we switched over to the Flanders Scientific products. Excellent monitors and that was all feeding component analog HD.

That’s wonderful. I shall get to work with my L5 then. Thank you!

Just to back up Walter…yeah, it looks great. Using a Kona LHi component out to my PVM-14L5 and it looks perfect. NO difference between what I had via SDI when I had that card in there, before it died on me.
