Can a 2008 Mac Pro run the latest apple OSX?

I’m shocked that the people at the Apple Store aren’t be more knowledgable. I have OS X Yosemite running on my 2008 Mac Pro 8-Core but I haven’t tried upgrading to El Capitan yet. According to Apple’s OS X El Capitan Technical Specs, the Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) is listed as supported so you should be fine.

BTW, I added an SSD as the boot drive to my 2008 Mac Pro and it feels like a new computer! Everything feels way faster. You might want to get an SSD if you haven’t already. 😉

Even better get a PCI SSD for the boot up drive. Our MacPros boot in about 14 seconds. This also frees up the fourth drive bay so we installed SoftRAID with four Seagate Constellation drives and get 500+MB/sec read speeds off that RAID. Lots of RAM and a Nvidia graphics card and we have some awesome 7 year old workstations!

Yea, that’s what I did to my 2010 Mac Pro. I added a 480GB OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 PCI Express SSD and I’m getting 650MB/s read and 582MB/ write times. Very fast and I have 4 bays available for my RAID 5 array.
