July 19, 2006 at 1:38 pmIf you’re using a 2 point camera (that is, a Camera with a point of interest), the Null allows you to make adjustments that effect both, so that the angle of the camera doesn’t change., And there are a lot of other reasons to use Nulls as well. You can use expressions to link the POI to the null, which you may find easier to control as well.
Also, you could use a null to simulate a handheld camera by wiggleing it slightly. Then it feels less mechanical as it moves.
The secret to good smooth camera motion, I find, is few keyframes, and use either Easy ease keyframes or auto bezier keyframes to keep the motion from being jerky. But these are generalizations, and it depends on the situation.
I had a student who showed me some camera work that he had set up, in which he had 12 camera keyframes, and had them ease in and out. And yet, the camera was shaking badly – why? Because those 12 keyframes were all within the space of 1 second! No matter how much you smooth that out – that’s almost 1 camera position for every 2 frames.
So the point is – use Camera Motion Wisely – not frequently. Unless you are doing some wild changes of perspective (and that happens often enough of flashier projects) treat the camera like a real camera. Ask yourself what that would look like if you did it with a real camera.
