I tried to create a Camera Archive for the first time, using it to ingest about 45 minutes of HDV tape, rather than my usual Log & Capture in FCP 7, then import files to FCP X. I really like seeing all 40 clips in thumbnail view, and with skimming it will be really fast to decide which clips to import. One pleasant improvement is not seeing the annoying extra clips that FCP 7 would create on Batch Capture my Sony HVR-Z5U. These clips are almost like a false start, they’re usually only about 10 frames or so.

So although I was initially disappointed to see that Log & Capture is gone from FCP X, it looks like a good work flow. I added a 2TB drive to serve as an archive disk, in addition to the system drive and a second drive used for video and scratch disks.
