Maxon’s team have replied quickly promptly.
“Thank you for reaching out, apologies but it is not possible to downgrade to a previous version of Cinema 4D Lite uses.
There were major changed in the licensing method between R20 and R21, and out Lite licences only currently work with S22/R23 as this is what currently ships with Adobe AfterEffects.
How many files do you need to convert? If it’s just 1 or 2 I can do that for you …“
All in, I think that’s a fair enough response. I asked if it was possible to get Lite r19.
I work for a software company and I understand that there can be unforeseen consequences when featuresare updated. Their offer for 1 or 2 files is nice enough and I’ll take them up on the offer should I need it.
I just wish I’d been informed when I still had r20 installed.

Last update I promise.
I’ve just been trying some of my files, I have misunderstood the error messages. Basically I can still open files from versions 11.5 and newer, but I cannot open files made in r11 and older. A lot of my earlier stuff was made in r11 and trying to open these files is what failed and sent me down this rabbit hole.
Most of the projects I want access to were made in r16, so it’s not as bad as I thought. I asked Maxon about accessing r19 if I paid for a full licence and they’ve suggested they could help me out. I’m probably not going to do that, but I’m impressed with their service desk’s response.
