  • C300 AMA Woes (I can never seem to solve this)

I’ve been using Avid for over a year now, and I am continually hitting a problem with trying to AMA link to C300 files. It’s driving me a little bit loopy at this point.

The first issue that I find bizarre, is that I seem to be totally unable to AMA link to the entire C300 folder, instead I have to drill down into each folder and manually link to each shot 1-by-1. Why on earth is this happening and how do I fix it? It’s a ludicrously luborious process when I should just be able to batch link to the whole contents of a card master. But it’s the only way I can get Avid to correctly link to the C300 files, if I try and do it for a whole folder, it just bounces back with an error message.

Secondly, seeing as I am currently only able to link to clips on a 1-by-1 basis, this causes problems when a shot has been recorded over 2 clips (I guess the c300 breaks up anything recorded that exceeds a certain duration into 2 or more clips). How do I get Avid to correctly interpret these split clips as 1 and bring them in as 1 clip, instead of 2?

I have seen some discussion on the Avid forum about moving all C300 card masters to the root folder of your drive. If it’s avoidable, I really don’t want to do this as I organise my editing drive on a per-project basis, with a folder for each project, and everything related to it (card masters, exports, client assets etc) stored within it. Obviously my Avid MediaFiles folder is on the root drive, that’s fine.

I have installed the Canon AMA plugin for the C300, and I am currently running on Avid Media Composer 7.0.3. OSX is 10.9.2 (Mavericks). All media stored on an external FireWire800 drive.

Any help with this constant bugbear would be amazing!

The only way I’ve been able to get the C300 to AMA properly is to download and install ALL the AMA plugins. Just the one for C300 doesn’t cut it. Not sure what is missing, or what the others have, but when I installed all of them, it worked fine.

I also had similar issues with AMA and C300 files (MC 7.0.3). The workaround solution that worked was to option-drag (on a Mac) the C300 folder from the Finder into an open bin. Worked like a champ.

Download Canon’s XF Utility from their website. Have it on any computer doing the AMA links as well as the Canon XF AMA plug in. For some reason this resolves a lot of the linking issues.

Also, After a year and many series done on Canon 300 offlining at proxy resolution and trying to link back to AMA for Hi rez. I suggest

    AMA link to card
    Consolidate to Avid drive
    Transcode to offline
Link back to consolidated media not AMA linked media.

Just works better with avid managed media. Keeps it as Canon C300 mfx op-atom but manages it like avid media.

Listen to Greg. He’s my boss, and we have done a LOT of C300 work in the last year. He knows best all the issues with linking and relinking.

(I forgot about the XF Transfer Utility thing…)

you don’t need to use the Utility for anything just have it installed.

    Thanks to everyone.

I will try your suggestions and see if they resolve the issue.

There are two plugs that you need to install for Canon XF AMA linking.

From Avid’s website: “In order for the Canon plugins to work properly, you must install the MXF AMA plugin as well (included with Media Composer 6.5.3, Symphony 6.5.3, NewsCutter 10.5.3 and later).”

I’m on a PC running Symphony and have been able to AMA Volume link to C300/500 cards since we started using the format.

Adam did you ever have any luck solving this? I’m desperate to figure this out – I’ve tried installing all plugins, downgrading from version 8.3 to version 7, having xf utility, all the correct plugins, etc. NOTHING I can’t even ama link to one single .mxf file. Option-drag does not work either.

I posted some issues on this other thread:
