buying 6.0.2 independent of final cut studio
Posted by Mark Denega on January 10, 2009 at 7:08 pmIs it possible? I want to purchase Final Cut 6 without buying the Final Cut Studio package. Does apple still offer Final Cut independent of Studio?

January 10, 2009 at 7:40 pmSeriously? What is there reasoning? That doesn’t cater well to students, who have trouble mustering up $40 for groceries, never mind $700 for extra programs that many probably do not want/need. When did apple stop selling FCP independently?

Apple is actually very much committed to students and offers an academic version of FCS2 at a 50% discount to there normal pricing. That’s very fair. If that price is too much, then you should be thinking about Final Cut Express, which is only $179.

January 11, 2009 at 1:45 amYea, what’s a student to do? Poor kids having to shell out $700 for software. What are they supposed to run on their shiny laptops?
No, I really feel for the poor kids today. Back in my time all I needed was a pair of VO-5850s and an RM-450. Pocket change. At least I only had to pay $22 for a 20 minute tape.
Get a grip, Final Cut Express or just steal like everybody else. I promise, I wont tell.

For the academic version. The “full”, “I can use this for paying clients” version is $2400.

January 11, 2009 at 2:45 pmThe Academic Version is less expensive and it’s also the full versions of the software, however it’s not upgradeable, and you must qualify for it by actually being a student of an authorized institution. It’s really better in the long haul to buy the retail license which is upgradeable. In a couple of upgrades, it ends up being less expensive than continually buying the academic version.
That said, when Apple was selling FCP as a stand alone, they also offered the package which contains all the apps, and that is what a TON of people were buying, so they dropped the individual app sales.ds
But Studio 2 includes DVD SP (you need that to burn DVD’s) and it includes Motion (which is a very strong motion graphics program) and (my favorite) Color. Color used to sell all by itself for about $25,000… it’s included in Studio 2. So from my point of view it’s a no brainer. Color grading with Color improves EVERY project you’d ever want to work on. LIveType comes with the package as well as Soundtrack Pro. All of these apps together are definitely an improvement over doing the work with just FCP. When you look at all you get for the bucks, it’s a steal.
