[Joel Kotlowitz] “Is there a way to patch FCP to a DVD player/recorder and burn the DVD in realtime?”

Yep, we do it all the time with our Panasonic DVD Recorder. We can even stop and start to put multiple files on each disc and it sets up a very basic menu.

Takes about 2 minutes to finalize a disc after we’re done recording.

how long do you think a 14 minute video would take???

Yes, you can. I do it once in a blue moon. I have a old Panny DMR-E80H DVD Recorder. Dave is correct, the finalizing time is killer on short programs. If you have an hour show, it’s not too bad. But, the quality is way better to do it internal in FCP to Compressor to DVD Studio Pro.

You would need some sort of I/O to get the video out of FCP. AJA, Blackmagic etc. to get A/V out to the burner. Again, most DVD burners only have S-video and Composite video inputs, so the quality will suffer.
Not to mention the crappy menus on most DVD burners.

[Dave LaRonde] “Yeah, but finalizing the disk takes forever and a day. After all is said & done, it works out to be far from real-time.”

what machines are you using? We used a Philips for about a year and a half and I’ve had a Panasonic for over a year. 2 minutes is average for us, though usually it’s more like less than a minute. The less we record on a DVD, the longer to finalize.

ok thanks for responding. How did you do it? Just patch FCP to DVD player, but how do you actually make it record??? In FCP do I edit to tape or print to video??? do I just hit record on the DVD player??? some guidance would be great. Thanks!

About 2 minutes to finalize, if that long.

With an external DVD Burner, it’s a total Manual operation. Park your sequence timeline at the head. Hit record on your Burner, hit play on FCP. That’s it. Hit stop on the Burner at the end of your FCP sequence.

The Burner’s operation is different on all units as far as titling and finalizing the DVD.

I was going to add, it would take about 30 minutes for a 14min clip on my DVD Burner. (14 min real-time and then about the same for finalizing) I can compress it and burn a simple auto-play DVD in DVD Studio Pro in about less time!
