  • Burning My Film to Blu-Ray from FCP

    Hello.

This is my first post, so I’m sorry if it is a bit wordy. Also, I added this same post to the “compression” forum. It has to do with FCP and compression so I hope it was okay to post at both forums.

I am totally confused on how to create a blu-ray version of my film for my friends, teachers, and myself to view on a blu-ray player, such as the PS3 or a standalone blu-ray player like the Panasonic DMP-BD35.

I am a film student and shot a project on Super 16mm and had it digitized to HDCam. From the HDCam version, I had some touch ups done using smoke and color correction.

Finally, I have the color corrected final cut of my film from footage captured using AppleProRes422 (HQ).

So, in fcp, I have a 1920×1080 high definition 16:9 aspect ratio 23.98 fps finished project in a matching 1920×1080 high definition 16:9 aspect ratio 23.98 fps fcp sequence. The film is about 26 min. long with stereo sound 16 bit, 48khz, balanced to -20dbs. It is what I want.

I want to take this film and put it on blu-ray (in 1920×1080, 16×9, 23.98fps) to be played on any blu-ray player.

I have a G5 PowerPC with Final Cut Pro Studio 2. I also have a (non-apple/mac) pc with the master collection of Adobe CS4 (so it has Adobe Encore) and a blu-ray burner.

I’m hoping to be able to use a combination of these computers and programs to turn the film in my fcp timeline into a blu-ray movie. (I don’t really care about copy protecting my film or anything like that)

Since this is the first time I’ve worked with HD material as well as the first time I’ve tried to make a blu-ray movie, I am completely confused by the proper workflow. Making SD films and burning in SD to dvds was simple, but this seems like a laborious undertaking. I’m willing to do the work, I just don’t know what work to do.

I’m guessing I need to use quicktime conversion in fcp, then compressor, then Adobe Encore, but I am not sure of this nor am I sure of the codecs I should be using.

Also, I am not really familiar with compressor, dvd studio pro, or adobe encore. So, the more precise, simple, and descriptive the help…the better.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Use Compressor to make an HD MPEG-2 and AC-3 file for BluRay Disc.

Take those files to Adobe Encore and create a Play Only disc. DO NOT create a full menu or any other buttons besides “Play” in Encore.

    Burn your project to disc.

    Enjoy.

    Walter,

I have not used Encore, but I have had some compatibility issues with certain players, when playing discs that were created in Toast with menus. Have menus been a problem with Encore as well? Is that way you suggest creating a play-only disc?

[Chris Babbitt] “Have menus been a problem with Encore as well? “

That’s putting it mildly. If you want to know the entire story, go search my Blog for numerous posts about the “pleasure” of working with Encore. Search for Encore. Funny story, Adobe actually emailed me and said they fixed everything I complained about for 12 months and they’d be happy to ship it to me once I paid for the upgrade price. Very thoughtful of them. I did end up upgrading our CS4 packages for After Effects and Photoshop so for giggles we tried out the new Encore CS4. It works just as well as CS3.

Long story short, anything other than a “Play Only” disc will result in your project not working, crashing, computer bursting into flames… (Ok, I made that last part up) You might also be lucky and get the “This Project Created On Windows” error. That’s a nice one.

If you really want to author BluRay discs, for real, get DoStudio from NetBlender. Windows only, but well worth the price when you want to get into real BluRay authoring.

    Walter,

I noticed that DO Studio has a thirty day trial (since I can’t afford the $3000 price tag and they no longer offer the monthly license). Do you know if this free trial version of the software would allow me to make a blu-ray with menus etc. that will play on a PS3 and stand alone blu-ray players?

Also, what about a third party company, like a post-house, authoring blu-rays of my project? What might that cost per disc?

    Thanks Walter.

Absolutely. The only thing you can’t do with the 30 day trial is create a replicatable disc that you could send to a commercial house for replication. But you can create a full functional BluRay disc with menus and everything. In fact they strongly encourage you do the 30 day trial before purchasing.

Depends on what you need. Probably starting at about $1,500 to $2,500 and going up from there. That’s for the authoring and first disc. Copies are much cheaper.
