burning blu-ray. PPC, OSX 10.4.11, FCP 6. how would i go about it?
hi,
i have a PPC Mac G5 running osx 10.4.11, using FCP 6.
i have started shooting images on a canon 7D and editing in FCP with no problems after converting to ProRes.
until now i’ve been exporting Movs for use on computers or producing SD Pal DVDs, burning them on my Mac.
i have a client who has asked for a Blu-Ray DVD.
is it possible to produce them relatively hassle free with my set-up? i’d imagine i’d need an external burner. what are the cheap options? would i need to use a specific authouring programme?if that isn’t cost effective or possible am i best to produce a quality Mov of the edit and take it elsewher to burn? if so is there anything i should bear in mind?
i’ve searched quite a bit but i haven’t really found the answers i’m looking for.

Search the post there are a few different ways to do this.
DVDSP does Not support Blu-Ray.However, you can buy a burner to go in the mac.
Buy Roxio Toast and burn away.Chris Tompkins

Chris is correct…you can burn a blu-ray with Roxio Toast. However you won’t be able to play it back on your mac.
Another workflow is using compressor/Adobe Encore CS4. It is more time consuming and I haven’t done it myself but I hear you get better results that way. Encore is a full featured authoring program like DVDSP, so you’d be able to do more with it than with Toast, like create full menus and so forth, but if you just want a one-step disc for immediate playback then toast would probably do the trick just fine.
As for the burner itself…you can get an internal one for around $200 that should be compatible with your system. I always use newegg.com. I’d check there first.

thanks for the swift responses.
i have toast 9 titanium but i see i need the HD/BD plug in! i’ll look into that.
does toast only do immediate playback DVDs?
i’d be looking to do a very simple i page menu with 2 or 3 buttons leading to videos. when the videos stop it’d jump back to the menu. is that possible?
i’ll trying finding info as well!

I’ve never done it, but a while back there were some posts about being able to burn a Hi-Def file onto a regular DVD and have it playback on some Blu-ray players. If you’re looking for a low-cost option do a search of forum archives.

I may be wrong, but I believe you would still need a Blu-ray burner to do this, but using regular DVD discs instead of Blu-ray discs.

You absolutely CAN burn an AVCHD Blu-ray Disk to a standard DVD, but you need Final Cut Pro 7. No Blu-ray burner necessary!

Again, I may be wrong, but you CAN do this using Toast (as long as you have the HD plug-in). I have done it (AVCHD Blu-ray) using Toast 10, but haven’t tried it using a standard DVD burner. It may work using Toast 9… try it and let us know.

hi, i guess with toast 10 hd i could make the blu-ray archive and send that to a shop where they could burn it onto a blu-ray dvd. is that right?
