Burning 5.1 in Vegas
Hello all,
I’m in charge of sound for a theater production and we’re using a 5.1 surround sound system. Part of my job is to create “original” environment mixes (ie: cars, beaches, etc) by compiling and mixing wav files. I thought that Vegas may be of help because I knew that it can process and render 5.1 audio but I also knew that it burned CD’s. I have some pan automation settings of cars passing by, starting at front left to surround left. I do not have a audio card that supports 5.1 so I am unable to test directly from Vegas, but I can see by the surround mixer that the audio is distributed from front left to surround left as the automation settings say. Since I can’t test off my machine, I have to burn CD’s and play them in my ps3 which is hooked up via toslink to my receiver. It’s very important that I am able to burn the smooth panning automation so I thought that burning straight out of Vegas would do that. Alas, the CD I burned was in stereo and not in 5.1. Is it even possible for Vegas to burn a 5.1? If so, how is it done? Thanks! -

I forgot to add that I have Vegas Pro 8.0. I want to also add my attempts at 5.1 audio tracks. I have successfully created a 5.1 track using 6 exported mono wav files from Vegas encoded into a 5.1 wav by SurCode. This would work fine if I didn’t need the surround sound automated settings. Correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t believe it’s possible to render the track as 6 mono wav files and still keep the automated settings a part of the track. I have also tried to render my track as a 5.1 wav file, but when I go to Nero to burn it, it isn’t a supported format. I’ve tried burning .ac3 files but the surround channels are centered and quiet. As you can see I’ve been all over the place and am at my end! Thanks again and sorry for the lengthy posts.

Problem solved.
Turns out, in case anyone needs to know, exporting the track as 6 separate mono wavs and encoding them with a DTS encoding software like SurCode does not affect the automated settings put forth in Vegas.

Surround 5.1 is rendered as mpeg 2 video without audio, then audio rendered as .ac3 + put both files in the same directory with the same name except for the .mpg and .ac3 extentions and then burn with DVDA. This should give you the surround sound you looking for.
Do you have a system that does play 5.1 DVDs to test your DVD on?
