Bump map
I once saw a tutorial on how to make text have a water ripple effect as a video rolled beneath it. For instance a pebble is tossed in the water and the text ripples with the movement.
I think it had something to do with the bump map but I’m not sure. Anyone help me find that tutorial or give some suggestions.

You want to use either the Displacement Map or the Height map (not the Bump Map). All you need is two tracks:
- Place your regular video or title, etc. on the bottom track.
- Place the video or generated media that is going to cause the ripple on the top track.
- Then change the Track Composite Mode of the top track to Custom and select Displacement Map.
- Finally, make the second track a compositing child of the first. This will get rid of any edges introduced by the displacement wrapping
The bottom track will now be displaced by the top track. Try it with the Height Map as well because that gives you more control over how much the height affects the distortion.

Thanks for this tip John. This is one I didn’t know. However, I was looking for the effect where the text looked as if it were floating on the water and as a wave went by (or any object) the text would wrap over it as if the text were floating on top of the wave.
This is not a wave circle but rather the look of text floating on top of a wave (if water is what the video clip is) -
