  • Bullet list: is this really the easiest way?

Need to create a bullet list that can easily be edited and controlled in Premiere (not my strongest software). The whole list can be visible from the start, just any points not being discussed are at 50% opacity, while the current point is 100%. The number of bullets and amount of text can vary wildly.

Finding the text abilities in Premiere to be a bit lacking, I made an AE mogrt for the text (auto-colored bullets, auto-scaling text, better margins, etc.) and brought that into Premiere. Then faced with the “current point highlight” I hit a wall. There’s no way I could see to set up the reveal in AE that they could keyframe in Premiere. I’d have to build something in Premiere itself. Again, not my specialty.

First I added an Adjustment layer with Blur effect and added an inverted mask, thinking they could just animate the mask from point to point with Hold keyframes. Surprised to discover Premiere won’t let you Hold on mask keyframes.

Okay, same idea but I’ll Hold-move the position of the masked Adjustment layer instead, only to find the mask doesn’t appear to move with the Adjustment layer.

Finally I put a dummy layer above the Adjustment layer, put a mask on that, added Track Matte to the Adjustment layer, then Hold-moved the position of the dummy layer to move the non-blurred section from bullet point to bullet point. It works, but it feels convoluted and clunky.

So is that the best way, or is there a simpler way in Premiere I just don’t know? I Googled like crazy trying to solve this and came up empty. Whatever solution I use needs to be as push-button simple for the editors as possible.
