Importing an AVI video was a problem until I installed Xvid. Now when I drag and drop the AVI into the time line area, the audio track says “building peaks” then Sony Vegas crashes. I’m not a techno guru by any means. It is probably a codec that’s causing the issue but am unsure which one it is and where I can download it.

You dont need to install Xvid for Vegas to work properly with AVI
files. Where are getting your AVI Videos?

Vegas does not support Xvid or DivX as source media. You will have lots of problems so don’t use them as source formats. I recommend you use an external converter to render them to a supported format first.

Steve I use a night vision camera the Pulsar Recon 570R which creates the AVI file. So I uninstalled Xvid and now Vegas will not let me import any AVI files. This is the error window that poped up “Warning:an error occured while opening one or more files. An error occured while opening a codec.”

John as mentioned above Vegas pro 12 trial will not let me import any AVI files unless Xvid is installed. I do have a workaround for my issue but would rather not to have Xvid installed like Steve mentioned. But for now with Xvid installed I can import AVI files. The problem then was when I dragged the AVI file into the timeline, the “building peaks” would not stop and then vegas would crash.

Here is my workaround and I hope this helps others. With Xvid installed I went into the directory to where my AVI file was and deleted the .sfk file that vegas creates when building peaks. After doing this I can drag the AVI file into the timeline with no issues at all. Seems the .sfk file may have been corupt maybe?

My goal is though guys is to find a workaround without Xvid installed. If you have any recommendations I am willing to try them out. I would like to thank you guys for your response. Hopefully we can come up with an idea for an Xvid workaround.

What video format does the Pulsar Recon 570R shoot because from your description it sounds like it records Xvid or DivX so you are going to need the codec one way or the other.
