Brief set up. We create theatrical trailers. More often than not, we are finishing with a D5 master of the final feature and shooting out to film. We edit in SD using a beta downconvert, 29.97, from that master D5 and export an EDL (cmx 3600) that is used for the HD online (usually non linear in an Inferno or Smoke).
For our clients that can’t afford a 3-4k online (at Fotokem, SSI, Modern, etc) we would like to offer HD onlines in house for much less.

    Here are the questions…

    1. considering that we’re filming out, should we be finishing uncompressed HD?
    2. would this seem like a reasonable setup (affordability is somewhat of an issue)

    computer-duel 2 ghz G5, 2 GB DDR SDRAM, Tiger 10.4.5, FCP HD 5.0.4
storage-sonnet tech Fusion 400 (not sure what drives to buy for it)
    storage card-Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 or 8
    video card-Kona LHe
Using AJA HDP with an apple cinema display to monitor

    Thanks

You have the right idea…. But you really shouldn’t cut corners here if this is something that will make you big bucks.

Check out ProMax at promax.com. They have some serious kicking systems that will do exactly what you need to do. Something to consider, you should look at the Kona 3 rather than the Kona LHe because the LHe does not upconvert to HD from SD. There will be a time when you’ll need this. Secondly, you need to max out the RAM on the computer since you’ll be working with HD. The more RAM the better the system will run. And the processors are extremely important her, too. Dual 2 gig processors will only handle very simple editing only. I would consider the largest Quad Mac available.
