  • build the world’s Greatest Camera Man Question for Dan

    Posted by Pedro Reynoso on July 29, 2008 at 3:04 am

    I read Dan’s Building the Greatest Cameraman and like always his tutorials are wonderful. I am building a slide show and need to have the camera focus on a picture layer for a certain amount of time, then change to another and so on until the camera goes through all of the layers. I used Dan’s project file and replaced Dan’s layers. Everything works well except that the picture layers that I used I want them to rotate and stop across from the camera for their set time. Is there a way to modify the expression so that the camera will go to the rotating layer in 3d, stop then have the camera continue on to the next layer. In advance, thank you Dan.

    I’m not sure what you’re asking. Is it the motion of the target layers that you want to change, or the behavior of the camera?

    I want the layer to rotate until the camera focuses on it. Then I want the layer to be still for few seconds, to be able to view the picture. Then I want the same behavior for all of the layers. I took off the rotation property of the layers and the behavior improved. However I also noticed that the more layers I make the more crouded it gets and it becomes difficult to see the picture that the camera is focusing on. Is there a way to make the layers spread out more on the x and y axis? I hope I made this explanation clearer. Basically this is a slide show of pictures.

    It probably wouldn’t be too hard to get the layers to stop rotating, but they might not be facing the camera, so it probably wouldn’t be of much use. You could get what you’re after, but it would involve a lot of new code.

    You can expand the range of the position expression with an updated version like this:

    minPos = [-thisComp.width*2,-thisComp.height*2,0];
    maxPos = [thisComp.width*2,thisComp.height*2,1500];

    //initial conditions
    strt = 0;
    end = 0;
    tmin = .5;
    tmax = 1.2;
    i = 1;

    while (time >= end){
    i = i+1; seedRandom(i,true);
    strt = end;
    end= end + random(tmin,tmax);
    }

    percent = (time – strt) / (end – strt);
    newPos=random(minPos,maxPos);
    seedRandom( i-1, true);
    x = random(); //this is a throw-away value
    oldPos = random(minPos,maxPos);
    ease( percent ,oldPos,newPos);

    Adjust the multipliers in minPos and maxPos if you need even more.

    This worked great Dan. I replaced this expression that you gave me with the old one on the layer’s position property. To make the whole thing work for me I deleted the rotation expression on the layers. This is great. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
