Browse Catalog — apparently odd behavior on multiple searches
I’m running CatDV 8.1.8. on a MacPro with OS X 10.5.8.
I’ve working on a long form documentary, so I’ve got seven catalogs (one for each day of shooting), each with about 90 clips in them.
I’ve transcribed many of the clips in each day’s catalog using Verbatim Logger.
Now, when I use Browse Catalog to search for a particular search term, if all the catalogs are closed it works just as advertised and I can see which catalogs have which number of “hits” for the search term.
If I double click on a particular catalog, it opens up and presents a filtered list view of the clips with the search term in them.
My question concerns what happens next….when I search for a second term with one or more catalogs already open.
Browse Catalog works fine still. I see which catalogs have which number of hits for the second search term.
However, if I double click on a particular catalog that is already open, instead of passing the search term into the catalog search/filter logic and presenting the correct clips in a filtered list view, I get the message “Catalog already open.”
This seems a little strange to me — for several reasons:
1. Why should having the catalog open “break” the search logic?
2. Why cannot CatDV either (a) close an already open catalog and repeat the logic it would use if that catalog was closed (as it now would be!), or (b) repeat the search logic with the catalog open?
As it is, I have to keep closing catalogs myself before I use Browse Catalog which seems, well, a little redundantly redundant. 🙂
Is there a better way to do perform repeated searches for different search terms without closing all the catalogs?
Hitting Cmd+W repeatedly isn’t a viable option as you’re likely to close the Browse Catalog window before you have finished closing all the open catalogs.
