  • Broadcast Safe Black Level – Is there a plugin?

Posted by Andrea Stewart on January 15, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Does anyone know of any plugin that will clip blacks at 0 much like the broadcast safe filter will clip whites at 100?

I have footage that goes below black in the FCP waveform, as well as my Tex1730. I’m outputting SDI from AJA to Digibeta. My shows have been rejected in the past for having black levels that were too low.

I know my levels are all close but rather than use CC for each clip I’d love to slap a plugin on it.

Use the Levels Filter for this. I usually set it to 97 or 98 and it should be the last filter you use on a clip.

Do you mean adjust the input tolerance to 97 or 98? Should this be done to the entire nested sequence after I’ve dropped the broadcast safe filter on it?

Oh, and one more question if I may.

Any idea why the levels would jump up and down on my waveform (as a whole, including the sync signal)while playing down the sequence? Even though it stays even in the FCP wf? Its as though the base level is up and down with each clip.

The Broadcast Safe Filter in FCP 6 should clip blacks at 0.

No it doesn’t. It clips the whites at 100.

The Levels filter will clip the blacks.

I don’t know why it just clipped the blacks on some beta footage that I digitized then. The Blacks were dipping below 0 and after I applied the broadcast safe filter, everything below 0 was clipped.

Broadcast safe does a nice job on the high end.

But to get safe 7.5 IRE blacks, does levels set to 97 do the trick pretty reliably?

    thanks!
