Folks, just noticed that Flanders Scientific updated their banner ads here on the forums with a 5% off sale through April 15th for Creative Cow users. I had a chance to test out their entire lineup of products along with Nick Griffin for an article Nick is writing for the Cow.

I was so impressed with them we ordered three for our shop to replace our CRTs. Thought I would pass this along in case anyone is looking for external monitors. These are the lowest cost, color accurate monitors, I’ve seen and now they’re even cheaper.

They’re the bright yellow banner usually along the left side of the forums and I have some of my initial notes in my blog about these. Nick’s article will go much more in depth.

Nope, I’m not a spokesman for the company, folks keep asking me what they can replace their CRTs with and here’s my answer. Last year it was TV Logic because I was excited to see an $8,000 color accurate LCD monitor. Now that price is all the way down to $2,500 with FSI! Yay!

    Walter,

Any idea why these monitor look so good although they are 8-bits (at least that’s what the specs say)?

I mean, I know specs don’t tell the whole story but I remember a few colorists showing their contempt for screens with 8-bits color depth.
Personally I have no idea, it’s a confusing subject.

Yep, 10 bit processing in the electronics. Virtually no banding in the image. You get banding when you have a 6 bit panel. When you look at the specs, if you see 16 million pixels, that’s a 6 bit panel. When you see 16.7 million pixels, that’s an 8 bit panel. The Panny 2550 is also 8 bit and it costs $1,000 more, though I don’t think the image is as good and I’m not a fan of the new power supply deal, that’s pretty weird.

If you have over $10,000 and really feel like you need a 10 bit panel, by all means go ahead. If you’re in a Telecine room, you probably want the 10 bit panel.

I don’t need to spend that much money and after spending time with these guys to better understand the technology that’s behind the scene on these things. They are just flat out outstanding. We just took delivery of our 1760W and it’s now in our Rialto suite. The 2450W’s will be here as soon as the 3D LUTs are ready. Should be early April.

So it’s not a surprise that they are “only 8 bit” and look so good. There’s a lot of really good engineering behind the panel that also makes it look so good.
