Boundary microphone(s) for recording in classroom setting.
Hi,
I’m going to be filming a series of classroom lectures and want to be able to record the students if they ask questions.
The classroom holds about 24 students and they are sitting at tables, 6 to a row with about 4 rows.
I’m wondering what the best way to capture the audio of the students asking questions.
I’ve looked at this mic: Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker I Array Microphone as well as
the Audio-Technica UA851A UniPoint Boundary Microphone.Any suggestions?

If you want the questions to be reasonably intelligible and the recording of the course is of primary importance I’d go with some wireless handheld mics that the students get passed whenever they have a question. Otherwise you’ll have to put lots and lots of mics everywhere and you’ll still get tons of room noise on their questions.

Noah makes a very good point. If you go that way, I’d want one mic for each of four rows and each mic would be on a separate track so that in post, you can mute any mic not being talked into.
I’d also want a dedicated person on a mixer for the mics because individuals have extremely varying abilities to work a simple mic. Some are scared to death and others will eat it every time. Most will wonder (and/or ask) why they don’t hear themselves over a PA when they speak into the mic.
