boris text crawl in FCP 6
Posted by Eric Filios on April 23, 2008 at 3:48 pmFinal Cut 6 now comes with a Boris calligraphy plug-in for doing text crawls. Sweet. it’s much more flexible than the standard crawl in FCP. But there’s an “import file” button at the bottom of the controls panel that doesn’t seem to want to import any files on my computer. It won’t do PSD or Pict or Jpeg or Tiff or TGA. Does anyone know what kinds of files it will accept? thanks, e.f.

April 23, 2008 at 4:48 pmThat would be any common text file such as one from Apple Text Editor ending with .txt — it does not accept graphics files.
BTW Boris Title crawl is not new. Maybe you just didn’t notice it before, but its been with us since at least FCS1.

April 23, 2008 at 4:59 pmWhen you hit the Import File button, a navigation window opens with two entry fields at bottom. The top line allows manual entry of a file name, or will fill in when a file in the window is clicked. The bottom field should say “Files of Type.” This is a pulldown menu, which will show what kinds of files are importable. I’m pretty sure the only thing you can import in the text editor is a plain text (.txt) file. For example someone could pre-compose a list of names for credits or a disclaimer or other copy. Once imported you would then apply formatting and styles in Calligraphy.

April 23, 2008 at 5:40 pmYeah, i figured that. well, it could save some time by having someone create the crawls on another computer and then importing them. i was hoping to be able to import a vector shape and incorporate it into the crawl. i might try livetype or motion next.
Btw, i made the jump all the way from FCP 3 to Final cut Studio 2, so i haven’t seen that crawl generator before. thanks for your replies.eric filios

I just downloaded a tutorial from Boris titled “Creating a Credit Roll.” This document states that “A complete set of tools for creating credit rolls is included with Boris Graffiti, Boris RED, and Boris Blue. The same functionality is available in Boris Calligraphy which is bundled with Apple Final Cut Pro…” Here’s the link: https://www.borisfx.com/tutorials/CreditRoll.php
Note that it says “the same functionality,” not “the same program.” The tutorial is based on Boris Graffiti, so I am not surprised that the tutorial’s step-by-step instructions don’t seem to relate to anything I find in my FCP Studio 2.
When I try to follow this tutorial, even approximately, in FCP, using “Boris/Title Crawl,” I don’t get the same results. For example, the tutorial offers a center-justified line, “Cast of Characters,” followed by left and right-justified columns for characters and actors.
I can’t seem to get that degree of flexibility. I can get just one kind of justification at a time. So, is this tutorial just plain wrong about “the same functionality?”
Or, did I fail to install some software when I installed FCP Studio 2?
Is there a tutorial that DOES relate to the s/w that is in my FCP?
Finally, any rec’s for the current best way to do this inside FCP would be most welcome. I’ve been resorting to After Effects for all of my scrolling.
Thanks!

April 30, 2008 at 7:05 pmYou can place multiple tab stops in the Title Crawl ruler. Double click on them to toggle between left aligned, center aligned, or right aligned.
All the best,

April 30, 2008 at 9:09 pmThanks Tom. It works as you described, but not as the tutorial lays it out.
I can’t seem to figure out where adjusting the rate of scrolling happens. It isn’t just the position properties setting, is it?

April 30, 2008 at 9:36 pmThe speed is a combination of the amount of text and the length of the text clip in the timeline. Pretty crude.

May 16, 2008 at 7:51 pmThe whole alignment and tab stop arrangement is incredibly confusing within Boris. What you would like to happen, is to select a set of lines and click say center justify. Then select a new set of lines and right justify. (just like in Word for example or Photoshop) If you try this it just doesn’t work and it’s rather incomprehensible what does. I’ve been trying for an hour now to enter a typical film credit scroll with a center blank column and I can’t work it out even after following that tutorial. I have a blank center column OK, but if you try having some text center justified half way down your scroll, good luck on making it work. Some instructions would be handy!!!

May 16, 2008 at 8:28 pmMark, I share your pain but I think the solution is easy. Unfortunately, what I found at the end of the process is that the crucial part (regulating the speed of the scroll so that you don’t get any weird video artifacts as a result of conflicts with video scan rates) is far from straightforward.
Before you start typing, set up ALL of your tab marks, whether they are left-justified, center, or right. Then simply tab to the correct mark while typing in your text.
But as I said above, the speed regulation, at least in the Boris title crawl software included within FCP6, is worthless.
If I’m wrong, someone please correct me. I assume that Boris wants us to buy their upgrade to make scrolling titles.
