Boris Red/ .mts files
Posted by Tom Canton on July 11, 2011 at 8:32 pmI’m a dedicated Sony vegas 10 user with Boris Red 5. The trouble is that, although vegas can play .mts files, Boris cannot.
I’ve tried CoreAVC codecs, FFDshow Mpeg4 codec, Mainconcept Decoder Packs H.264/AVCPro and K-Lite Codec Pack 7.2.8.
Boris, as a stand alone app will not recognize .mts files. Using Boris as a Vegas plugin will now recognize the files, but they are dark, contrasty and useless to work with.
I don’t think either Vegas or Boris are the problem. What am I missing? What am I not doing properly? Am I forgetting to do something?

July 12, 2011 at 8:43 amAs per my experience, the standalone version of Boris Red5 can only read avi files in 64bits version (as Boris red 5 64 needs the 64bits codec to ead the file – further to a reply I got from boris team few weeks back).
In the 32bits version it can read .mov files as well (quicktime is only 32bits).
On my system RED5 as a plugin for Vegas plays correctly the .mts files.
By the way you should uninstall all the codec pack you mentioned as it can mess up Vegas. -

I’m guessing that these two things are directly related (i.e., ffdshow/codec-paks and poor quality video).

As Guillaume said, you need to uninstall of of this stuff (ALL of it!). It has probably replaced the high quality codecs that you paid good money to Sony for, with low quality free alternatives. Good luck getting it all unraveled. Once you uninstall them, I would re-install Vegas Pro in hopes of getting everything back to normal.

July 14, 2011 at 12:02 amThanks for the reply.
I have removed the codecs so they’re no longer an issue. However, .mts files still don’t play in Boris 5 when I use it as a plugin for Vegas. They work on your system? If that’s the case then I have an issue with my system somewhere. Any ideas?
It is a 64 bit version that I have. AVI’s are not an issue, nor are quicktime files.
Thanks again for your advice.

July 14, 2011 at 12:10 amThanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate all input.
The codecs have been uninstalled. Vegas is functioning extremely well (as it always does). Again, Boris Red 5 is still not playing .mts files.
It didn’t play .mts files before I tried the codecs and is still not playing them. That’s the issue.
Any advice along those lines.
Thank you.

Boris RED 5 will never play .mts files because it only accepts .avi files so you should stop trying to make it work. Just use RED 5 as a plug-in within Vegas and it will work with ANY media that Vegas can place on the timeline.

That doesn’t make any sense because when RED 5 is a plug-in for Vegas it has no idea what the original file type is. It gets it’s video data from the Vegas timeline.
[tom canton] “They work on your system? If that’s the case then I have an issue with my system somewhere.”
Yes, they work on my system. RED 5 works with anything that is on the Vegas timeline. It’s gets the data stream directly from Vegas.
Are you trying to add .mts files as a new track in RED 5 when it’s a plug-in? This won’t work because RED 5 can only open AVI files as tracks. Just feed it the .mts source via the Vegas timeline and it will work.

July 15, 2011 at 12:05 amYes, it is understood that Boris Red 5 plays only AVI. That has already been established.
It has also been established that Boris Red 5 is being used as a plugin to Sony Vegas 10.
The issue, once again, is that AS A PLUGIN TO SONY VEGAS 10, BORIS RED 5 DOES NOT ACCEPT .MTS FILES. Vegas plays them wonderfully, but Boris doesn’t. It reads: “This file could not be imported because it is not a recognized type or is not readable.”

Since you know that Boris RED will only read AVI files, why would you think that this would change when it’s a plug-in to Vegas???
Boris RED only reads AVI files. When used as a plug-in to Vegas, you should place the MTS file on the Vegas timeline and apply Boris RED to that. This is how you use MTS files in Boris RED. Once in Boris RED, don’t expect to be able to load an MTS file separately onto the Boris timeline because Boris will only read AVI files.
BTW, did I mention that Boris RED only reads AVI files? 😉

July 15, 2011 at 10:49 pmOkay, you don’t seem to get it. The .mts files are in the Vegas timeline. The message still appears when Boris is applied to it.
BTW: You should seek to understand the question before responding. If you need more information then simply ask.
I mean, think about it: why would anyone use Boris as a plugin then try to separately import .mts files when it only accepts AVI?
I think I did point out to you that the fact that Boris accepts only AVI was not only pointed out before in this thread but was, even then, an obvious statement that anyone who uses Boris already understood.
If you don’t know the answer then fine. No problem. Don’t respond. That’s perfectly acceptable. But if you do respond at least read the common thread in front of you to understand what has already been posted, (eg: Boris accepts AVI) and try to understand the question. Otherwise you responding is a pointless exercise for both of us.

Wow Tom. Please allow me to apologize because obviously took my answer the wrong way. The smiley wink “;-)” was meant to show you that I was trying to be funny but obviously you took offence so once again, please allow me to apologize. It was not my intent.
I thought that you misunderstood me when I said that you can work with MTS files when Boris is used as a plug-in to mean that it will somehow load MTS files once applied to an event in Vegas. Obviosuly that was not your understanding so let me try again.
Here is what I thought you previously said:
[tom canton] “The issue, once again, is that AS A PLUGIN TO SONY VEGAS 10, BORIS RED 5 DOES NOT ACCEPT .MTS FILES. Vegas plays them wonderfully, but Boris doesn’t. It reads: “This file could not be imported because it is not a recognized type or is not readable.””
Given what you have just told me (i.e., that the file is on the Vegas timeline) I do have a new question:
Are you saying that you place an MTS file on the Vegas timeline, you apply Boris RED to the event, you launch the RED GUI and you get the error, “This file could not be imported because it is not a recognized type or is not readable.”?
WOW that is strange because at that point Boris should not be even trying to read a file. It should be getting a video stream from Vegas. Do I have this correct? Because I can’t reproduce this error. I use Boris RED on my MTS files all the time.
