  • Boris 3D titles blurry if not at even number?

Posted by Ron Dylewski on February 15, 2006 at 8:25 pm

    Hi –

I recently found that if I use the built-in Boris 3D titler to create a simple lower third, that they will look a bit blurry if they are not set (in the motion tab) at evenly divisible numbers. In other words, if I just drag the title to where I want it, it may land on some off number, like -121.03 — and this will not look as sharp as it would if this title were at -122.

Is this just a quirk…or is it me…or…

    Thanks

    Ron

That’s correct, but it is only for either the vertical or horizontal, not both. I just can’t remember which one.

VERTICAL position must be at even integer.

    Horizontal position does not matter.

If you use the control tab to set your position, you won’t have this problem. You won’t need to keep track of whether you’re on a whole, even integer or not. The same goes for any of FCP’s generators that let you change position in the control tab. When you set the position in the motion tab, you’re positioning the entire frame that the title is in, if you use the control tab, you’re only positioning the title in the frame.

[Arniepix] “If you use the control tab to set your position, you won’t have this problem.”

    This is absolutely correct information.

en you use the FCP Motion tab to move the titles, they cease to be a Vector based graphic and instead are rasterized by FCP, thus degrading the title.

If you use the Boris Control Tab to position the graphic, it remains vector based and yields a very clean title.

It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you can type in some numbers pretty quick.

    Amen, the voice of reason.

I extol the virtues of using the controls tab to set type position in my book as well.
