  • BMD HDMI capture – supports HDMI 4:2:0 sampling?

Posted by Alex Gerulaitis on January 30, 2013 at 6:20 am

Blackmagic Design HDMI capture devices such as Intensity Pro, Ultrastudio, etc. – do they support capture of 4:2:0 signals from HDMI devices such as Panasonic GH3?

The specs say 4:2:2 (and 4:4:4 on some BMD products) but don’t mention 4:2:0.

    Anyone tried?

    Thanks.

    Hi Alex,
I had the same question some days ago. Please take a look here:

    or here:

4.2.0 might be not the problem because in 4.2.2 the 4.2.0 information is included. There might be problems regarding chrome keying but the output from the GH3 is principle ok.

    60p is the thing!
The Output from the GH3 delivers HDMI 1080/60p and 60p is only supported from capture devices like the Ultrastudio 3D or UltraStudio 4K.

Current it is impossible for me to do a test in Germany because I didn’t found someone with a Ultrastudio 3D/UltraStudio 4K.

Would be great to find someone doing a test to capture the GH3 output:)

Have you tried emailing BMD support? Sometimes that works. 🙂 (I haven’t yet.)

I don’t think that was BMD support really – pretty sure it’s just someone maintaining an unofficial G+ page and community on their own time. So emailing BMD support may still make sense – far as I know, they don’t monitor the G+ page, and probably not even the forum – at least not 100% of it.

Thank’s Alex for the info. I didn’t checked the G+ Page of this Community, now I have done this… It is not official BMD and from that point it is useless… I deleted my Thread in this Google+ community because I don’t want to support such places…

It works with UltraStudio 3D. Yesterday on Friday I bought the capture device and now I’m testing.

    1. UltraStudio 3D is very noisy. After connecting power and Thunderbolt the fan starts immediately and is very loud. Might be an issue with bad designed driver because the device itself works and delivers an output which is recognized by different other solutions.

    2. HD 1080p50 is the setting in BMD UltraStudio 3D the signal from the Pana GH3 is captured over HDMI.

    3. I send a mail to BMD Support regarding the noisy fan. It seems that this problem is known with the UltraStudio 3D. Have to check this because it is to noisy for normal work!

Whoever maintains that page and community isn’t making any money off of it, so I am not sure why you’re having such negative feelings about it.

    Thank you.

Does it work with 1080p60 that you were looking for?

It has the look and feel of a official BMD page/community. This is not the right way because they using colours and optic from BMD.

I don’t know what the output from the Pana GH3 is. Official Panasonic said 1060p60, but BMD Media Express and BoinxTV capture works only with 1080p50 not with 1080p60.
