I’m interested in buying the Black Magic Video Recorder as a low-cost, high quality way to archive material from VHS and analog 8mm tapes. The only reason I’m considering it is because it includes the option to capture to a “full-res” format.

Does anyone know what format it captures to? DV-quality quicktime? Uncompressed 8-bit QT? Something in between?

Does anyone know what uncompressed format the Elgato USB capture sticks capture to?

I just called Black Magic support; they said that the “full-res” setting still captures to H.264, just at full resolution – 720 x 480.

Can anybody confirm this? I’d really like an inexpensive solution for capturing higher quality analog video.

    Hi Patrick,

The Video Recorder is a hardware H.264 encoder every it captures is to H264.
