The transition to FCP 5 has been a bit difficult with my Decklink Extreme card. After updating to 5.02 most have been solved, but there’s one I still can’t figure out. Despite having my capture preset set to Blackmagic 8-bit, anything I digitize comes in as uncompressed 8-bit. Even things I import from AE that were rendered in BM 8-bit come in as uncompressed. Sometimes I will get a message saying that the BM 8-bit codec can’t be found.

I have downloaded the latest drivers from Blackmagic. Anyone know why this is happening?

    OSX 10.3.9
    G4 Dual 1.25
    FCP 5.02
    Decklink Extreme

    Thanks,
    Burt

from what i understand, the BM codecs are exactly the same as the Apple codec. So it’s doing exactly what it should do.

    Hi Burt,

Firstly, you mentioned difficulties with FCP5 and I notice you are running Mac OS X 10.3.9. We recommend that DeckLink customers do not use this version of Mac OS X and instead should upgrade to Tiger for use with FCP5 and DeckLink 5.0 drivers.

In regards to the 8-bit codecs, we have replaced our Blackmagic 8 and 10-bit uncompressed codecs with Apple’s codecs. We have done this on the request of Apple as this should avoid some technical problems with QuickTime in the future. There is a technical note about this at https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=78. It’s a long note so you might want to skip to the sections regarding FCP 4.5 and FCP 5.0.

I’m not sure why you might see a message that the Blackmagic 8-bit codec cannot be found. The Blackmagic 2vuy and Apple 2vuy codecs are written to the same 2vuy standard and either codec should be able to read both Blackmagic and Apple 8-bit 2vuy files. We still install the older Blackmagic 8 bit 2Vuy codec for older files and this is documented in the long technical note. Please take a look at it as it explains a lot. Hopefully it is reasonably clear but please let me know if anything requires clarification.

    Hi,

To be honest, we’ve been dealing with this issue for a while. I was dissappointed when I received my first Decklink SP two years ago and am still dissappointed today as I am running three decklink systems. Seems as though Blackmagic has the better codec and is adopting Apple’s codec to make certain things easier.

In all the responses from blackmagic over the years it is clear that Apple’s codec is broadcast quality but not near the caliber of the original Blackmagic uncompressed codecs. I run all my systems on OSX3.8 FCP4.5 and Decklink version 4.8. I still use the original blackmagic codec for all SD work, IT JUST LOOKS BETTER!!!

CHEERS for making the bomb codecs. Why aren’t we using them anymore??? Oh yeah, that’s right.

    Thanks,
    Craig
