  • Bluring a small part of the image

Posted by Kenny Doren on January 6, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I was going through some of the video filters to blur only a small part of the video image (client does not want someone’s head to be clearly shown) and could not find a filter that would apply the blur in a cropped part of the image. The filters were applying it to the whole image.

I could get around this by creating a duplicate of this footage and cropping it like a mask and applying the filter but I was hoping that a filter applied to the original footage could just have a crop function too.

Is there a filter that does this or what am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much for your input,
    Kenny

Send the clip to motion, then duplicate the layer and add a Gaussian blur to the copy then
apply a circle mask and animate.

    Motion really is a winner.

if you get the Noise Industries FxFactory for FCP all of the filters have a built in mask that you can use, they even have some blurs. It’s a pretty good package overall and can be expanded incrementally since multiple vendors create filter bundles for the suite.

They also all work in Motion and After Effects, under the same install.

Try downloading Andy’s Region Blur 3 plugin filter for this:

    https://web.mac.com/andymees/Free_and_Easy/main/Entries/2008/3/19_Andy’s_Region_Blur_3.html

Free and very easy to use. After downloading, put it in your Library>>Application Support>>Final Cut Pro System Support>>Plugins folder. It will show up in the Blur folder in your FCP effects.

    Dupe the footage
On V2 clip, place Blur>Gaussian Blur and Matte>Shape Matte to area. A Mask Feather would also be a nice touch. All done WITHIN FCP.

Please use Andy Mees’ excellent blur Plugin, mentioned above.

I use it constantly. I recently tracked and removed an ear ring that a Police Detective was wearing by mistake(!), and often remove cables and light stands to get through QC and pimples on actors’ faces.

Andy Mees, as I often say, is a God.

There is also a whole bunch of other FREE plugins up on his site.
