  • Blur without going outside the mask boundary

Posted by Xavier Paredes on September 8, 2018 at 1:59 pm

I have to blur some text on video but I need it to not blur anything outside of the mask boundary. I tried a couple of blur effects including Gaussian but they all seem to go beyond. The reason is that I have other text right below it that literally touches the text I need to blur, hence my post.

    Thanks for any pointers.

Without an example, based on what you are saying, put the text to be blurred on its own layer.

Alternately, use an ADJUSTMENT layer with the mask and blur, that will constrain the blur to the masked area.

Not sure that would work because all the text is part of the video (i.e., not on separate layers). See screenshot of a portion of the video. The text that needs to be blurred is the date.

When I draw a mask and apply a Gaussian, the blur bleeds into the text right below it.

I’ve had this issue before but never this bad where the two elements are so close to each other.

    Thanks.

You can still cut out the section that needs blur as a separate layer, so you can constrain the bounds of the blur. It may require precomping that piece.
