February 26, 2009 at 1:36 amI went with Toast, because I had heard such bad things about the Mac version of Encore and, of course, I didn’t want to buy Premiere. Perhaps I made a mistake. We’ll see.

February 26, 2009 at 2:35 am[walter biscardi] “But neither Toast nor Encore conform to commercial BluRay specs. That is, you cannot send out a BluRay disc created from either of those software programs to a commercial replication house. The discs will be rejected.”
It should be noted that one of Roxio/sonic’s bd authoring apps “dvditpro HD” does
support the CMF format defined by Sony for replication and it is certified.though it can’t do any of the really cool BD-J or BD profile 1.1/2.0 stuff that
Scenarist HD or Do Studio can.I’m planning on licensing Do Studio when my clients migrate to more advanced features.

February 26, 2009 at 4:57 amDavid made the best point I think. FCP isn’t going anywhere and is hear to stay. FCP is what sells FCP – not BD authoring support.
Anyway, this discussion has been going on for over a year and a half now. I thought it was over when the CEO of Apple said there will be no BD support in Apple computers – I guess some people didn’t get the word. 🙂 I wish they had a good BD authoring tool to – but they dont!! Either stop supporting Apple or find other options…..
Its just a sensible business choice of Apple’s! It wouldn’t be called DVDSP with Blu Ray. It would have to be a completely different app. HD DVD was only folded into DVDSP since HD DVD(standard content)is almost identical to DVD. I agree with Walter that it would probably have to cost anywhere from 5-10K to re-coup the money put into design/testing and licensing – and that’s if they have orders lining up for miles. Of course this wouldn’t be the case since Blu Ray is such a small part of the digital delivery market. In such case your costs would double.

February 26, 2009 at 5:20 am[David Roth Weiss] “It doesn’t seem to be hurting Apple one bit. BluRay deployment is still miniscule and, just like the early (and expensive) days of SD DVD, available to those who really think they need it.”
In the early days of SD DVD, the only real competitor was VHS. Now, Blu-Ray is competing against cable VOD, online downloads & streaming, Apple TV, Slingbox, etc.
The public was very quick to adopt DVD as it dropped in price. We’ve yet to see if the public really wants Blu-Ray, or if the moment has already passed during the format war with HD-DVD.

February 26, 2009 at 7:34 amThanks, Walter.
I forget there’s a technical spec difference between authoring burned discs and ones designed to be professionally replicated.
That makes complete sense, that it’s the high level replication that incurs the licensing fees, and Apple wouldn’t want to release DVD-SP that isn’t capable of “Pro” level authoring – in which case it would cost a lot more.
How about they release DVD Studio Lite (burning only – no replication option)!

Be sure to take advantage of the 30 day free trial. It’s the entire application, just does not allow the actual commercial spec to be used, but you can learn the entire app and even create your title.

I’m not sure.
if you ask around on the dvditpro HD forum on the roxio site, (that’s where I ready about it)
and scott (before he left) proclaimed 6.4 had been certified by Sony. -

Seems to only refer to the burners and players themselves. Nothing about a change in the licensing structure for software / authoring tools.
