  • blowing up DV to HD 10bit uncompressed in FCS Studio 2? Terranex?

    Hi all,

I’m cutting a doc that is shot about 50/50 DV PAL (4×3) and HDV PAL.

We are going to finish to HDCAM SR in 10 bit uncompressed – with the potential (nothing certain) of filming out from there.

What is the BEST way of blowing up the DV PAL to HDV size? Keep in mind the DV stuff was all shot 4×3 so it will already be blown up even more within the frame and then repo’d or not depending on the shot.

On previous shows I’ve just output SDI to Digibeta and then run it through a terranex, transferring to a HDCAM SR. I had a good result that way but am wondering if that’s still necessary.

IS Final Cut up to snuff now such that I could use their scaling and blow up and just take it to an FCP based post house and simply have them output our sequence to tape in HD 10 bit uncompressed?

Is Shake or Motion or Compressor a better option?

How do you go about doing an entire cut sequence with any of those programs?

Would we want to separate out the HDV shots or do it all at once?

Regarding the HDV stuff – I know all I want to do with that is a straight output from a rendered FCP sequence in 10 bit.

So I’m really focusing on how best to get the DV up to size.

These are a lot of questions I know but I’m looking for any and all advice.

    Much obliged.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Jim,

This has been discussed here many times. I think you’ll find that Terranex will alway yield the best results, with hardware upconversion through a Kona 3 coming in a comfortable second, AE coming in a few lengths behind, then heading for home Compressor makes a gallant bid for forth, with FCP bringing up the rear, but still looking pretty good while doing so.

HDV? DV to HDV is not going to look at that great. In your title of the thread you say 10bit UC, but here you say HDV. Which is it?

4:3 will remain center punched when you upconvert to HD. If you try to fill the 16:9 screen, it will be stretched out.

For DV material, Teranex is still the best option. Kona 3 does a really good job, but the Terranex is cleaner. For Beta, DigiBeta, DV50, the Kona 3 is excellent.
