Blackmagic Intensity and PPro 5.5
Posted by Mike Smith on September 28, 2011 at 9:10 amIs Blackmagic Intensity and PPro 5.5 a workable combination? I have a dealer advising me that Intensity knocks out some Mercury Playback Engine functionality and MX02 mini would be better. Any experience with this appreciated.

September 28, 2011 at 10:42 amI haven’t kept up if either of them have implemented any mercury acceleration – I know all three (add AJA) were looking at ways to shoehorn some level of GPU acceleration onto their cards.
The Mercury engine works regardless of hardware; if you have the right GPU you get certain key effects for free – the GPU handles this extra load.
Generally, either card you mentioned, will have the same problem – you get all the real time mercury effects only with the right nvidia card, not via the output card.
The workflow is to run everything as RT as possible, switch to your output card (the BM or matrox) and then do a render/preview for output. So, in that respect, neither helps you.

September 28, 2011 at 12:15 pmI used a BM Intensity on FCP and had no issues.
I tired to use it with PP CS5.5 on a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1, simply for monitoring my video.
First, you have to use a BlackMagic setting for your sequence. Then you can choose to view the Program monitor via the BM card. But, I didn’t get Source monitor to work. Plus, I started to have some Source monitor playback issues within Premiere. I didn’t spend a lot of time with it, since the issues popped up right away. I’ve since uninstalled the BM software.
I didn’t notice any interoperability issues with the Quadro 4000 card.
