    Hello all….

I have just done a tidy-up on my HD (Mac G5) and now when I open FCP 5.1, the screen goes black. Everything is OK until I open FCP. Even on the ‘black’ screen, I can still see FCP if I roll-over my side bar, but I get a black screen again by mousing away. Any ideas – it’s driving me mad!

Trash your preferences for FCP, or try typing cmd+f12 to turn off the full screen monitoring… It sure sounds like that is what’s happening, and you’re viewing slug.

    Thanks very much, Jerry.

    cmd+F12 did the trick!

i have the same problem, and tried cmd+f12 but it simply does the same thing that f12 does by itself. i can’t trash the fcp preferences because the screen is completely black, no access to the menu. by other methods when i can get to the menu, preferences are greyed out. help! i caused this when i was fooling around with set-ups to capture video.

    thank u!!!!

I had the same problem with the black screen after opening FCP 6.0.1. Not sure if these steps will be the same for FCP 5.1, but hopefully this may help. After starting FCP I moused to the top of the black screen. After a few seconds (maybe 5 seconds) the top menu bar dropped down. Clicked on Final Cut Pro and moused down to Audio/Video Settings in the drop down box. Then clicked on the Summery tab. From within the summery tab I clicked on the Video Playback setting. I had accidentally switched this setting to Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main. I reset it to None and clicked OK. No problems since.

    Hope this helps!
