This may take several posts to explain correctly, so bear with me.

I’ve created a laser beam in Paint Shop Pro 7. It has a white beam layer, then a white glow layer, then a blue outer layer. I saved it off as a merged image, a png file. Even though I started out with a transparent background to work on in PSP, when I save it off as a png file and open it again, it has a black background. No problem – I just remove everything that’s colored black, thinking this should leave me with just blue, fading into the transparent BG.

I load this image into my Sony Movie Studio Platinum 9, and put it in the video track above my existing video to have a laser coming out of somebody’s ray gun. And this works, sort of. The vast majority of black did get removed, but there is a transparent rim of black surrounding my laser beam. When I go back to remove even more black, then I have a fakey looking blue laser – all my feathering gets removed.

How can I fix this? I don’t want to have to create a laser solely in Movie Studio with the tracking controls, because that will affect everything I already have on that video track in my project. That wouldn’t let me have rounded ends to my laser beams, anyway, doing it that way – I tried. Help!

[James Magda] “I saved it off as a merged image, a png file.”

That’s your problem right there. Merge will throw away the transparency because it merges everything into the background layer. What you want to do is EXPORT it as a PNG and it should keep the transparency. If I remember PSP correctly (it’s been a while since I’ve used it) the export dialog will show you the transparency before you save it.

Great! Can’t wait to get home to try that out. I have been trying all kinds of thing to try and get this thing to work.

    Thanks, John!

If it doesn’t work or you need more details just post back. When I get home I can look at my copy of PSP and remember what I use to do but I created PNG’s with transparency all the time.

OK, here’s what you need to do in Paint Shop Pro:

    • Go to File | Export | PNG Optimizer…
    • In the PNG Optimizer, select the Transparency tab
    • Make sure that Alpha channel transparency is selected
    • Press OK to export

The file should now come into Vegas will the correct transparency.
