Black line on HDV/XDCAM clips dropped into DV PAL Anamorphic sequence
Hi guys
This is an issue that has been bugging me again & again. Whenever, I insert HDV or XDCAM clips or sequences into a DV PAL anapmorphic sequence I get a black line across the top of the clips. This hasn’t mattered for broadcast, but it shows in Quicktime Exports for the web.
Why does this happen? I have to crop it out for web exports.Alex Bluffield

Hi Alex,
Why you go to DV?
I’m normally working with EX-1 footage (some times mixed with HDV) and I end up in DVDs and web videos. The picture I get is outstanding and never black lines or any other kind of artifact. Off course I never go to DV. That’s like to kill your picture.
You may be getting that black line because the Shift-fields. Try setting your sequence in ProRess (Upper) and get rid of the Shift Fields filter.

Had to go DV because we were mixing in DVCAM footage & thought it was better to downscale the HDV/XDCAM than upscale the DVCAM. Shift-fields filter – I noticed that was on some of the clips – I’m guessing it converts the field dominance from upper to lower on the HDV/XDCAM clips? Still stumped by the black line though…I don’t know what fcp does to convert hd footage onto sd timelines – it’s magic to me! If anyone knows please chip in. Thanks, Alex.

Hi Alex,
Even if you are mixing your EX-1/HDV footage with DV is worth to render with a better codec and set FC to the most demanding setting. Is not the same downscaling in 8b than in 10b.
You will see the difference even if you go to DVD or web video.
The only case that doesn’t makes much sense is when you will end in a DV tape. All the improvements get crunched when compressed to DV.[Alex Bluffield]

This is OK. FC set the shift-fields filter.
