Black IRE level confusion
I am confused by Vegas, apparently useing 0 RGB for its Black level. It was my understanding that in the digital world, 16 RGB equaled 0 IRE.
So, when I fade to black, in Vegas8, the IRE level drops below 0.
Everything else that I have is set between 16 to 235 RGB, which I believe equates to 0 to 100 IRE.
Is there a way to set Vegas8’s internal black level to 16 RGB?

The scope in Vegas can be set to different configurations.
Look in the Vegas help file for an explination of the scope
settings. How you set them depends on several variables such as your hardware and codec used.Regards, Rick.

There’s no setting. In some cases it’s appropriate for fades to black to go that low, otherwise the workaround is to place generated media on a track below everything else and set the black of that media at 16.

I have been useing clips of Generated Media (set at 16), to fade into, to accomplish “fades to black”, as a workaround. It never occured to me to simply place the entire bottom track at 16-Black. Great tip!
If there is no way to set the Vegas default Black to 16, then this seems like the way to go.
I will also have to letterbox a 16×9 to a 4×3, again keeping the black top/bottom borders at 16 (0 IRE). I don’t believe that the Broadcast Filter will hold those borders to 0 IRE (though it will on the actual clips), so laying the 16×9 over a black bottom track of 16, again, may be the way to go.
