Black highlight around selected objects.
When I click on an icon an in other instances I am getting a black line tacing a square around the object. This just started. Any idea what is going on?

Having a dark gray box with a light gray line around it show on files/folders is completely normal. If this is what you are talking about, it is normal.
If it is different then post a picture so we can know exactly what you are talking about.

Try trashing the preference file below and see if that solves it. The path is:
Macintosh HD>Users>’yourname’>Library>Preferences>com.apple.universalaccess.plist
