Black dots in my motion graphics when I put it on top of Canon Footage
Hello All,
First and foremost let thank you guys for all the help you have provided me in my young career as a shooter and an editor….so thank you in advance…
Okay so heres the problem…I have been using Apple Motion 4 to create motion graphics with success…but when I export…as Pro Res 4444 and import into my final cut than layer it on top of the clip I am trying to use….there are black dots!! that can be seen around the graphic…why is this happening….
oh yeah..the canvas I am using is XDCAM422 24p
and the footage is Apple pro res 422 HQ from a Canon 7D and 5D….Here is a basic example of my problem…
it happens from about 0:10 to 0:18 roughly…please help…

I don’t think the dots are particularly distracting, The first time I watched it I didn’t even think they were an artifact of the compression process but rather part of the title effect. That said…
What happens when you place the same title on another background? Dark vs. light background…you might see a hint to the solution.
I suspect the problem may be related to the colorspace but my understanding of colorspace theory is a bit limited. I suggest this because you are going from 422 to 4444. The black specks may be caused by a lack of color info at those pixels (those pixels are out of gamut) due to the overlap of the colorspaces.
You might want to ask something along those lines in a forum frequented by colorists (I hesitate to suggest the Apple Color forum, since it is technically off-topic)
Can anyone on this forum confirm this?
You could try exporting as a 422 colorspace to test this idea.
I am curious why you have Dave Chappelle as Rick James when Tribe mentions Rick James. I just thought I would point that out in case it was an oversight.
A suggestion-you might consider putting the individual rappers names on screen since they have aged since most of us were watching their videos. 😉

Have you tried skipping the export process and putting the motion file directly in FCP?

You’ve been able to do that since Motion 2. Try it and see if it helps.

okay figured it out…just put the motion file into FCP…hahaha got it!….but should it also….bring in the audio as well…because mine is not doing it…

No. No audio back from motion unless it came from a ‘send’ in fcp. 🙁
