I’ve encountered some funkiness working with gaps in timeline and fades to black in Resolve and I wanted to ask if I’m just not wrapping my head around the concept right or what.

Basically, when an EDL comes into resolve, each clip alternates which “track” it’s on, upper, lower. Cross dissolves are simply overlapping clips. Fade to black is another black clip on top of a video clip. That all works great when it’s brought in with the EDL.

One problem I experienced is with gaps. Say something fades to black, then there is a 1 second gap of lack, then something fades up. For some reason while rendering, even with “render holes as black” turned on I will sometimes get a random rogue frame render out.

But when I try to add my own black manually, either to fill a hole (to make sure it works correctly), or to add my own fade, the black clip seems to add itself to seemingly random place in my timeline.

I guess the question is this – when chosing “add black” in the editing mode, what are the rules behind where it goes? What duration clip, in what relative position to the current playhead position, etc. I’ve tried experimenting briefly but I don’t seem to be getting it.
